Business Advisory

Business Advisory: A Finance Professional in Your Corner All Year

Consulting solves a problem and ends. Advisory is the relationship that stops problems getting that far.

Most small and mid-sized Canadian businesses talk to a finance professional once a year, at year-end, about a period that closed months earlier. Every decision in between gets made alone.

Business advisory changes the rhythm. We review your numbers regularly, meet with you to talk through what they show, and stay available for the decisions that come up between meetings. Not a project with an end date — an ongoing working relationship.

What It Includes

A regular rhythm, not an annual event

Advisory engagements are built around a predictable cycle so that financial information reaches you while you can still act on it.

Monthly or quarterly management accounts
Scheduled review meetings with management
Cash-flow monitoring and early warnings
Budget versus actual tracking
Rolling forecast updates
Profitability review by line of business
Decision support between meetings
Year-end planning through the year, not in March
Advisory vs Consulting

The difference is time, not subject matter

A consulting engagement answers a question — is this division profitable, why is cash tight, should we expand. It has a beginning and an end.

Advisory is continuous. The value is not in any single meeting but in the accumulation: we come to know your business well enough to notice when something changes, and you have someone to think out loud with before decisions are made rather than after.

Many clients start with a one-off consulting engagement and move to advisory once they see the value of regular contact.

What It Is Not

Being clear about the boundaries

Business advisory as we provide it is management accounting and business support. It is not regulated investment advice, audit or assurance, and it is not legal counsel.

Where a question needs a lawyer, a CPA for assurance work, or a licensed investment advisor, we will tell you and help you brief them properly. Knowing the edge of your own competence is part of the job.

Questions

Frequently asked

What is business advisory?

Business advisory is an ongoing relationship in which a finance professional reviews your numbers regularly, meets with you to discuss what they show, and is available for decisions in between. It is continuous support rather than a one-off project.

How often do we meet?

Most clients meet monthly or quarterly depending on the pace of the business and how much is changing. The cadence is agreed at the start and we keep to it.

Is this the same as a fractional CFO?

It overlaps. The label matters less than the scope. Our advisory work covers management reporting, forecasting, cash flow and decision support. We are explicit about what falls outside that — regulated assurance, audit and investment advice are not services we provide.

Do I need advisory if I already have a bookkeeper?

They do different jobs. Bookkeeping produces accurate records. Advisory interprets them and helps you decide. Many of our advisory clients use our bookkeeping service too, which makes the advisory work faster because the underlying records are already reliable.
